Call it a remake or a prequel, it's doesn't really matter. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) takes center stage as first-time director Matthijs van Heijningen tries to spin the tale of what happened in that Swedish research station in Antarctica before John Carpenter's iconic 1982 remake of The Thing. If you guessed: A bunch of people in parkas get massacred by a shape-shifting alien monster, you are correct. And if you remember how Carpenter's film started, you know how this one ends. More unnecessary "reimagining" from Hollywood--made even more ironic by the fact that its inspiration was an extremely well-imagined remake to begin with. 103 minutes R.
