For this earnest father-and-son effort, Martin Sheen stars, while Emilio Estevez writes and directs. Sheen is Tom, an emotionally and spiritually burned-out opthamologist from L.A. who is asked to retrieve his estranged, globe-hopping son's body from a tiny village along the French-Spanish border. Seems free-spirited Daniel (Estevez) perished in a freak thunderstorm in the Pyrenees while undertaking the ancient pilgrimage walk across Spain known as El Camino de Santiago. Stepping into his son's shoes (literally), Tom decides to complete his son's journey. Instead of spinning a heavy, Catholic-centric parable, Estevez and Sheen have created warm, ruminative and deeply human road movie.121 minutes PG-13.
