Director/producer Roland Emmerich (Stargate, Independence Day, Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012) does a complete career 180, ditching money-grubbing blockbusters for Oscar-baiting costume dramas. Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill) stars as Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford—who, according to this film's far-fetched mythology, actually wrote all of Shakespeare's plays. The sociopolitical reasoning for all this is mighty shaky. But the costumes look quite nice. 130 minutes PG-13.
