Spanish provocateur Pedro Almodóvar (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Live Flesh, Volver) tones down the camp and channels a bit of David Cronenberg for this queasy, bodily horror flick. Antonio Banderas goes all mad scientist as a messed-up plastic surgeon experimenting on a beautiful burn victim (Elena Anaya from Sex and Lucia) in his secluded estate/laboratory. There are extended flashbacks, lots of unhealthy sex, a revenge-for-rape subplot and a dude dressed in a tiger costume. It sounds crazy as hell, but it all comes together thanks to some mighty uncomfortable revelations. Blood and gore is almost nonexistent, but this psychosexual mood piece will definitely make you squirm. 117 minutes R.
