What Time is it There?

From Taiwan comes this darkly humorous examination of urban isolation. A young Taipei street vendor (he sells watches) with a grim home life bumps into a girl on her way to Paris. The two forge an instant romantic connection, but are quickly parted. In Paris, she finds herself friendless and miserable. Back in Taipei, he sets all his watches to Paris time and spends his days watching Truffaut movies. Director Ming-Liang Tsai (The Hole) is into quiet, minimalist filmmaking, but his work carries a heavy emotional impact. In Madarin, Taiwanese and French with English subtitles. 116 minutes
