Triumph of Love

Mira Sorvino and Ben Kingsley star in this adaptation of the 1732 play Le Triomphe de L'Amour by Marivaux (a reference for you college-educated kids in the audience). Bernardo Bertolucci (The Last Emperor) co-wrote it and produced it. Unfortunately, he handed the directorial reins over to someone else. Sorvino is a fairytale princess who is determined to return her country's throne to its rightful heir, a young prince with whom she has fallen in love. Complicating matters is the fact that the prince has fallen under the sway of a noted philosopher (Kingsley). In order to win her prince, our heroine must infiltrate the philosopher's estate and adopt a variety of disguises. Romantic hijinks ensue. It looks great, but is too self-conscious to really click. 112 minutes
