Beijing Bicycle

A young Chinese bicycle messanger named Guei saves up money to purchase his own set of wheels. Just as he's about to pay off the coveted bike, however, it gets stolen and sold to another young man named Jian. Jian needs the bike to impress his friends at school. The bike's two owners cross paths several times, with the prized possession switching hands each time. With its bicycle-centric plot and mondo depresso, Neo-Realist style, Beijing Bicycle is clearly influenced by Vittorio De Sica's The Bicycle Thief. Still, this one emerges as a subtle, symbolic examination of China's class system. In Mandarin with English subtitles. 113 minutes
