The Importance of Being Earnest

Director Oliver Parker and actor Rupert Everett, who did a fine job adapting Oscar Wilde with the jolly An Ideal Husband, have marginally less success with their second go-around with one of the playwright's classic romantic farces. This time, they've made the mistake of trying to upstage Wilde--who does just fine on his own, thank you. The cast (including Judi Dench, Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth) are all having too much fun, diluting the tart zing of Wilde's words and reducing the whole thing to a wacky period sitcom. 94 minutes
