This Oscar-nominated animated film features a simple ink-and-watercolor art style that well befits its mid-century modern setting. The time is the late 1940s. Our protagonists are an up-and-coming piano player and a sexy singer who form a tempestuous personal and professional relationship in pre-Revolutionary Cuba. Unfortunately, fate and jealousy conspire to keep our lovers apart. From the glowing nightclubs of Havana to the glittering streets of Manhattan, Chico & Rita paints a vivid canvas. The real lure, though, is the Afro-Cuban jazz music—much of it delivered by real-life musicians like Tito Puente, Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo. 94 minutes Unrated.
