It's not hard to see why faux Brit Madonna got obsessed with the story of King Edward VIII, who gave up the throne to marry American divorcée Wallis Simpson. But as a writer and a director, Madge is surprisingly dull. There's little excitement in this tedious costume drama. For some reason, MDNA throws in a parallel story, set in modern day, about a woman obsessed with the former royal family, who's falling in love with a security guard at Sotheby's. Occasionally, for no discernible reason, the story lines cross over. The costumes are nice, though. 119 minutes R.
