The Deep Blue Sea

British director Terence Davies (The House of Mirth; The Neon Bible; Distant Voices, Still Lives) adapts a 1952 play by British writer Terence Ratigan (ah, symmetry). Here, Rachel Weisz (The Mummy, The Constant Gardener, The Bourne Legacy) gives the performance of her life as the wife of a British judge trapped in a self-destructive affair with a Royal Air Force pilot (Tom Hiddleston from The Avengers). This is from England, so the eroticism is kept mostly in check—but Weisz does amazing work getting across the emotional turmoil of the film's conflicted main character. 98 minutes R.
