The Deep Blue Sea

British director Terence Davies (The House of Mirth; The Neon Bible; Distant Voices, Still Lives) adapts a 1952 play by British writer Terence Ratigan (ah, symmetry). Here, Rachel Weisz (The Mummy, The Constant Gardener, The Bourne Legacy) gives the performance of her life as the wife of a British judge trapped in a self-destructive affair with a Royal Air Force pilot (Tom Hiddleston from The Avengers). This is from England, so the eroticism is kept mostly in check--but Weisz does amazing work getting across the emotional turmoil of the film's conflicted main character. 98 minutes R.
