Belgian filmmakers the Dardenne brothers (La Promesse, Rosetta, The Son) employ a remarkable nonprofessional kid actor (Thomas Doret) in this bluntly unsentimental tale of an angry 11-year-old boy abandoned by his father and taken in by a young hairdresser (Cécile de France). The Dardennes don't go in for showy emotions. As a result, this almost documentary-like film never surrenders to sappy manipulation or Hollywood-style self-congratulation. In French with English subtitles.87 minutes Unrated.
