Writer-Director Lawrence Kasdan (Body Heat, The Big Chill, The Accidental Tourist) tries to recapture some of his '80s mojo with this tear-filled comedy. Diane Keaton plays Beth, a mother with Olympic-sized Empty-Nest Syndrome unhappily married to a workaholic surgeon (Kevin Kline). When Beth finds a lost dog by the freeway, her life changes for the better. After a few life-changes (and a painful amount of dog-worship footage), the pooch goes missing out in the woods. This requires the whole family to come together, work out their various issues and find the stupid mutt. The whole exercise is both pleasant and terribly banal. Even animal lovers may find their patience tested by this lightweight, community theater redux of The Big Chill.103 minutes PG-13.
