We Have a Pope

Wry Italian filmmaker Nanni Moretti (The Son's Room, Caro Diario) hooks up with French actor Michel Piccoli (Contempt, I'm Going Home) to spin this comical tale of a lowly cardinal unexpectedly tapped to become the next Pope--a job he insists he doesn't want. Hoping to prevent a panic among the faithful, the Vatican hires a not-particularly religious psychiatrist (writer/director Moretti) to find out what's wrong with the new Holy Father. Wise, funny, sweet, insightful and surprisingly respectful, the film could probably have used a bit more of the filmmaker's bite--but it's still a fine conversation piece. In Italian with English subtitles. 104 minutes
