The Color Wheel

Ultra-indie in form and content, this drama/comedy/romance/road flick/what-have-you was the toast of last year's AFI Film Festival's Young Americans series and got voted one of 2011's Best Undistributed Films by Film Comment magazine. Your milage may vary. An obnoxious brother and sister duo (Carlen Altman and writer-director Alex Ross Perry) find kinship while engaging in a cross-country car trip and insulting pretty much everyone in America. This lo-fi, black-and-white narrative is intentionally clumsy, off-kilter and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" uncomfortable. Nevertheless, Perry manages to turn nihilistic comedy and 16mm lensing into something fetishistically mesmerizing. 83 minutes
