Mixing the head-trippy, hyper-literate styles of Adaptation. and Stranger Than Fiction with the brainy, metaphorical structure of Pygmalion, writer-actress Zoe Kazan (Revolutionary Road) imagines a struggling young novelist (Kazan's real-life boyfriend Paul Dano) who dreams up the perfect fictional girlfriend (Kazan, of course)--only to find her coming to life in the real world. There are moments when twee hipsterism threatens to take over, but the story does a fine job of exploring the pitfalls of (literally) creating your dream girl. The film (directed by Little Miss Sunshine helmers Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris) heads in some dark directions, while cleverly exploring its magical-realist concept. 104 minutes R.
