King of suburban depression Todd Solondz (Happiness, Welcome to the Dollhouse, Storytelling) returns with more pathos-stuffed humor. Here, a neurotic, toy-collecting dweeb (Jordan Gelber) who lives at home with his parents (Christopher Walken and Mia Farrow) hooks up with a gal (Selma Blair) who's got her own issues with arrested development. Solondz doesn't really do sympathetic. His characters are horrible losers and fairly unrepentant about it. But the man's got a certain love for these lumpy outcasts. Swim past the breakers of cruelty, condescension and selfishness and you'll find a strangely optimistic, fun house mirror remake of The 40-Year-Old Virgin.87 minutes Unrated.
