This jaw-dropping, "how the hell did that happen?" documentary spins the tale of Frederic Bourdin, a twentysomething French con man who somehow passed himself off as a 16-year-old Texas boy to a grieving family whose son was kidnapped. By using a lot of dramatic reenactments, the film becomes a psychological crime thriller straight off the pages of Patricia Highsmith. What would make a grieving family believe this man's cockamamie story? In order to explain why he neither looked nor sounded like their son (and could not remembered any pertinent details about them), he spun a fantastic whopper involving white slavery, brainwashing and medical experiments. Crazy thing is he succeeded. For a while, anyway. Fascinating stuff. 99 minutes R.
