The Two Horses of Genghis Khan

A young singer from Inner Mongolia (Urna Chahar-Tugchi, playing herself more or less) travels to the city of Ulan Bator to repair her mother's antique horse-head violin. In the process, she embarks on an episodic journey to rediscover the long-lost lyrics to an ancient folk song, "The Two Horses of Genghis Khan." The best elements are the exotic scenery and the mesmerizing folk music woven throughout. Writer-director Byambasuren Davaa (The Story of the Weeping Camel) approaches this slow-moving slice-of-life as if it were a documentary. The results are certainly anthropological, if a bit passive. 91 minutes
