Stoker
South Korean director Park Chan-Wook (the man behind such gloriously grim films as
Oldboy and
Lady Vengeance) tries his hand at English with this hyper-gothic coming-of-age tale. Mia Wasikowska is the titular India Stoker, stuck moping around her parents' mansion after the untimely death of her beloved father. Relief, if you can call it that, comes in the form of her long-lost uncle (Matthew Goode from
Watchmen), who shows up to seduce India's frigid mom (Nicole Kidman) and otherwise act really creepy. Gorgeously shot and pregnant with bloody menace, the script never really delivers on the eerie atmosphere's supernatural promise.
