The Evil Dead was already remade as 1987's Evil Dead II. And it was awesome. Still, first-time Uruguayan writer-director Fede Alvarez seems to at least care about the material. The result is an incredibly gory, delightfully brutal reboot about some young people trapped in a cabin in the woods with a demonic book. (Yeah, story was never the strong point of the original film.) This one could have used a dollop of humor and some genuine scares, but it is distractingly gross. 91 minutes R.
