The Act of Killing

This bizarre and brilliant docu-whatsit, executive produced by Errol Morris and Werner Herzog, takes viewers to Indonesia to revisit the chilling history of death squads circa 1965. Here, actual former death squad leaders are challenged to reenact their crimes against humanity, using dramatic scenarios to depict their memories and feelings about the long-ago killings. The amateur filmmakers employ a positively whacked assortment of well-known film genres--from film noir to Westerns to musicals--to re-create their dark history. The result is surprisingly honest and one of the most singularly hallucinatory documentaries in recent memory. Gut-wrenching, mind-blowing stuff. 122 minutes Unrated.
