Children on Their Birthdays

If your sole requirement for a film is a lack of violence and an absence of curse words, then this wispy adaptation of a cornpone Truman Capote yarn is perfectly acceptable family entertainment. If, however, you prefer drama, realism and compelling stories, then this nostalgic coming-of-age tale will seem awfully drab. It's 1947 and a mysterious 13-year-old girl arrives in small-town Alabama with her mute mother in tow. Two young boys fall in love with her, scrap over her and eventually join forces with her to outsmart a wily con man (Tom Arnold). Director Mark Medoff (Children of a Lesser God) aims for old-fashioned Disney-style entertainment, but ends up with a melodramatic episode of "Our Gang." 102 minutes
