Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Alien, Black Hawk Down) directs a meandering script from desert noir king Cormac McCarthy (No Country For Old Men). Michael Fassbender is an El Paso lawyer who may be in financial straits and could somehow be involved with a major drug deal gone bad. The film really doesn't seem to want to let audiences in on its plot. The arid wit of the Coen brothers is sorely missed here. The wordy dialogue is extremely philosophical. To top it all off, Ridley Scott directs with all the flashy surface detail and celebrity obsession of his brother Tony Scott (Top Gun). Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt and Rosie Perez round out the ensemble cast. Diaz is particularly bad as the film's nominal villain.117 minutes R.
