Wadjda

An enterprising Saudi schoolgirl dreams of buying her own bicycle--much to the outrage of neighbors, teachers and religious leaders who don't much like the idea of females with freedom of transportation. Writer-director Haifaa al-Mansour is reportedly the first female filmmaker in Saudi Arabia, and--against great odds--she's crafted a charming coming-of-age tale that disarmingly and entertainingly examines gender roles in today's Middle East. 98 minutes PG-13.
