Blue Is the Warmest Color

A 16-year-old girl falls in love with a blue-haired art student in this explicit romantic drama. Director Abdellatif Kechiche (The Secret of the Grain) doesn't exactly shy away from the sexual antics of nubile young lesbians—in fact he sort of revels in them. The acting—particularly by newcomer Adèle Exarchopoulos—is revelatory. The sex is, well, copious and beautifully shot. If only Kechiche had been a little more scrupulous on the editing. At three hours in length, the film sticks around a bit too long. In French with English subtitles. 175 minutes NC-17.
