Black Nativity

Langston Hughes' 1961 stage production, a retelling of the Nativity complete with gospel musical numbers, gets translated to the big screen by director Kasi Lemmons (Eve's Bayou). The expanded story concerns a streetwise Baltimore teen who travels to New York City to spend the Christmas holiday with estranged relatives. Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige and Tyrese Gibson are among the cast. 95 minutes PG.
