This low-key Disney/BBC-produced biopic recreates the meeting-of-the-minds that occurred when American filmmaker Walt Disney (wisely played by Tom Hanks) talked British author P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson at her thorniest) into coming to Hollywood and adapting her beloved children's novel Mary Poppins. A series of flashbacks attempts to show us why Travers is such a persnickety grump. But the scenes in which Travers butts heads with a screenwriter (Bradley Whitford) and a couple of composers (B.J. Novak and Jason Schwartzman) form the real heart of the film--the battle to deliver a work of art to the public while maintaining one's integrity. 125 minutes PG-13.
