A Touch of Sin

Filmmaker Jia Zhangke explores the controversial (and frequently hidden) world of violence and corruption in modern-day China. This grand-scale, anthology-style film is inspired by four shocking (not to mention true) events. Over the course of the film, we meet an angry miner enraged by corruption, a rootless migrant who discovers the possibilities of owning a firearm, a young receptionist pushed beyond her limits by an abusive client and a factory worker facing increasingly degrading circumstances. The hard-hitting subject matter is enlivened by Zhangke's gorgeous, lurid, almost Tarantino-esque style. In Mandarin with English subtitles. 125 minutes
