Dutch auteur Lars von Trier (Breaking the Waves, Antichrist) gives us part one of his massive rumination on sexual addiction. Charlotte Gainsbourg plays the battered and abused titular woman, rescued from an alleyway by curious fisherman Stellan Skarsgard. Safe in his dull apartment, she relates her life story (the first half, anyway). Needless to say, it involves a lot of sex. Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, Connie Nielsen and others parade through, providing our anhedonic heroine with either fleeting sexual gratification or hard-won life lessons. Heavily pretentious, laden with Freudian symbolism and rigidly unerotic, this sex lecture (with diversions into fly fishing and Fibonacci numbers) isn't for every fetishist.118 minutes Unrated.
