The Business of Fancydancing

Author/poet Sherman Alexie tries his hand at directing with this colorful, chaotic character study about a successful, gay Indian poet who returns to the reservation where he was born to attend the funeral of a close friend. Alexie provides no simple narrative road map to follow and no easy answers to the questions he raises. (Our protagonist is frequently attacked for exploiting a heritage he has little connection to.) Still, Alexie's fiercely independent vision (the film was shot in less than 20 days) is sharp and emotional. 103 minutes
