ABC Africa

This sober documentary on the AIDS epidemic in Africa seems like an unusual choice for lavishly praised Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami (Taste of Cherry, The Wind Will Carry Us). This shot-on-digital feature was originally intended as a video notebook of Kiarostami's UN-sponsored trip to Uganda, but the director eventually decided that the material stood on its own. Despite the limited scope (it only touches on one country and one hospital), Kiarostami finds the human face behind this crisis of numbers, capturing for us a beautiful, vibrant nation and its people. 83 minutes
