God's Pocket

Actor John Slattery from "Mad Men" directed this indie dramedy, one of the last on-screen appearances by Philip Seymour Hoffman. The late actor plays Mickey, a schlubby everyman in a working-class Philadelphia neighborhood whose no-good stepson is murdered at a construction site. Our downbeat/beatdown protagonist is supposed to make things right, arranging the burial and collecting some debts from some bad people—but he gets sidetracked by drinking and gambling. John Turturro, Richard Jenkins and Christina Hedricks round out the "friends doing favors" cast. 88 minutes R.
