The Last Bolshevik

Groundbreaking French filmmaker Chris Marker (La Jetée) contributes this documentary about little-known Russian filmmaker Aleksandr Medvedkin. By all accounts, Medvedkin was a devout communist and an equal of film legends like Eisenstein, yet his films were banned in the Soviet Union and his name stricken from official records. Seems that Medvedkin's unbridled creativity, humor and surrealistic style were seen as somehow subversive. Marker's film not only tracks down the history of this forgotten artist, but records the joy with which his films are greeted in modern-day Russia. In the end, the film becomes a rather brilliant chronicle of the rise and fall of Communism in the Soviet Union. In French with English subtitles. 120 minutes
