The Rules of Attraction

Writer-director Roger Avary (Killing Zöe) tries once again to prove to movie audiences how hip he is with this overstylized adaptation of a Brett Easton Ellis novel (as if American Psycho and Less Than Zero weren't enough). Ellis imagines a modern college campus so filled with booze- and drug-fueled orgies that it would embarrass the most sinful of Roman Caesars. Rich preppie kids do drugs, have sex and ... actually that's pretty much all they do. This generally loathsome film seems to exist for no reason other than to give an outlet for young TV stars wanting to soil their image. See James Van Der Beek ("Dawson's Creek") deal drugs! See Fred Savage ("The Wonder Years") shoot heroin into his toes! See Jessica Beil ("7th Heaven") get gangbanged! At about the halfway mark, the film becomes tedious and completely unwatchable. Don't say I didn't warn you. 110 minutes
