Wondering why times are missing?

In Praise of Love

King of the French New Wave movement Jean-Luc Godard (42 years older than when he made Breathless) lets loose his latest complex, confounding and controversial cinematic effort. The first half of the movie is shot in black-and-white film and concerns a brooding Parisian artist who can't decide what form his latest project should take (movie? book? opera?). The second half is shot in color-saturated digital video and flashes back two years in the past to tell the story of an elderly French Resistance couple in the process of selling their life stories to Hollywood carpetbaggers. As always, Godard has stretched the limits of narrative film to the breaking point. Even the most intellectual of filmgoers will have a hard time grasping this one. In French with English subtitles. 97 minutes
