Punch-Drunk Love

Oddly enough, this 2002 film from Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia) is not an epic ensemble drama. Instead, it's an exceedingly bizarre romantic comedy about an off-kilter plunger salesman (Adam Sandler) who saves up enough pudding lids to win a trip to Hawaii. (No, really). There, he embarks on a romantic adventure with a mysterious gal (Emily Watson). ... And then the evil phone sex Mormons show up. (Again—no, really.) Unpredictable, original and—like all of Anderson's movies—a love-it-or-hate-it proposition. A fine Valentine's Day film for those with a demented sense of romance, though. 95 minutes
