OK, now the party can get started!

The D Train

A middle-aged loser (Jack Black) tries to lure the former high school stud (James Marsden) back to a 20-year reunion in suburban Pittsburgh. While it looks like your typically raunchy bromance, The D Train is more interested in the uncomfortable humor of sad, emotional truths. Thanks to a kinda believable twist about 40 minutes in, the narrative switches gears--for better and for worse. If only the filmmakers had pushed the envelope a bit more, nailing the transgressive comedy they were hoping for, rather than retreating to easy sitcom laughs whenever things get too edgy. FULL REVIEW: Bromantic dramedy tries to be edgy, settles for “edgeish” by Devin D. O’Leary (5/7/2015). 97 minutes R.
