Uzumaki

This hit Japanese horror film is based on the comic book of the same name by Junji Ito. In it, a high school girl and her androgynous boyfriend try to unravel the mystery of their isolated seaside village, which is slowly being overtaken by spirals. Seems the curly-cue shapes are manifesting themselves in all kinds of sinister ways--from hypnotic snail shells to murderous hair curls to deadly hurricanes. Former music video director Higuchinsky has created a creepy, campy mixture of David Lynch, Tim Burton and H.P. Lovecraft. Despite the off-kilter silliness of the premise, the film has a haunting resonance that sticks around long after the lights come up. In Japanese with English subtitles. As a bonus, this film will be screened with the locally shot short film "Science Bastard." This splatterpunk superhero saga is written and directed by Scott Phillips (screenwriter of Drive and Horrorvision) and stars Alibi film editor Devin D. O'Leary. It's a night of twisted humor and tweaked-out gore! 90 minutes
