8 Mile

You've gotta give Eminem some credit for choosing a first film vehicle that is at least semi-serious and not entirely self-aggrandizing. The recruitment of director Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential) is another wise move. If only the script were at all interesting. A grubby, Detroit-set version of A Star is Born, Purple Rain, Glitter and just about any other rags-to-riches rock story, 8 Mile mopes along at a sluggish, semi-autobiographical pace. Fans will be disappointed to note that their boy doesn't even manage to let loose with a single rap song the entire movie. Instead, he wanders around depressed, complains about his crappy life and tries to overcome stagefright. Well-done, but dull. 126 minutes
