The Look of Silence

Filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer follows up his devastating and curiously beautiful documentary The Act of Killing with this more personal take on the subject matter. This one concentrates on a single Indonesian man—an optometrist by trade—who decides to break his country's code of silence and confront the men who killed his family during the 1965 Indonesian genocide. Whereas The Act of Killing (with its arty, metaphorical recreations of past atrocities) was passively detatached, The Look of Silence is blunt and poignant. 103 minutes PG-13.
