This debut dramedy from writer-director Alonso Ruiz Palacios captured four Mexican Ariel Awards (the Mexican equivalent of the Oscars), including Best Picture and Best Director. The black-and-white, French New Wave-inspired film follows the adventures of Sombra and Santos, two slacker college students left to wander the streets in the wake of a strike at the National University. One day Sombra's screw-up kid brother arrives, delivering the news that their childhood hero, folk-rock legend Epigmenio Cruz, has been hospitalized and is dying somewhere in the city. With nothing better to do, the three boys embark on a roundabout quest to pay their last respects. In Spanish with English subtitles. 102 minutes Unrated.
