The Bank

From Australia comes this corkscrew-plotted, beautifully lensed mathematical thriller. A Ph.D. grad (soon-to-be-hot David Wenham) has come up with a computer program that can predict the rise and fall of the stock market. He's quickly recruited by an evil banker (Anthony LaPaglia at his sharky best) who thinks he's found the golden goose. Before long, though, the paranoia starts to set in and things start racing toward their unpredictable, whiplash-inducing climax. It's hard to make a film about computer programs, mathematical formulas and the stock market sound like an exciting cinematic outing, but this is honestly one of the year's best thrillers. 103 minutes
