Far From Heaven

Director Todd Haynes (Velvet Goldmine) crafts an exacting tribute to director Douglas Sirk. Pretty much nobody remembers Sirk these days, but his patented social commentary melodramas were pure '50s Hollywood gold. In this 1950s-set film, a seemingly perfect housewife (Julianne Moore) discovers that her husband (Dennis Quaid) is gay, and finds comfort in the arms of her African-American gardener (Dennis Haysbert of "24"). It's two taboos in one! With its garish Technicolor cinematography, schmaltzy soundtrack and insidious scripting, Far From Heaven treads a fine line between loving tribute and straight-faced satire. 107 minutes
