Crime of Father Amaro

One of the most succesful films in Mexican history, as well as one of the most controversial, this spicy melodrama is based on a Portuguese novel from 1875. The film tells the story of the titular priest (Gael Garcia Bernal, hot off Y Tu Mama Tambien) who sleeps with a local girl, gets her pregnant and helps her obtain an abortion. The "crime" in question, however, is the young priest's ambition, which forces him to deny his human transgressions in an attempt to climb the church's hirearchy. Of course, most critics have attacked the film for its sexual content, missing the political and religious criticism at the heart of the film. Ultimately, though, the film is more interested in being a highly emotional soap opera than in tearing down sacred institutions. In Spanish with English subtitles. 120 minutes
