Producer James Cameron and director Steven Soderberg try their hand at remaking Andrei Tarkovsky's 1972 sci-fi film (and, by extension, Stanislaw Lem's 1961 cult novel). More than an hour shorter than Tarkovsky's contemplative gem, this abstract sci-fi art flick follows an Earth-bound psychologist (George Clooney) to a remote space station orbiting a mysterious liquid planet. Seems that the scientists assigned to this station have all gone a bit bonkers, and it's our hero's job to find out why. Shortly after arriving at the station, the doc bumps into his long-dead wife. That's when things get really weird. Achingly slow and infinitely obscure, this one will bore and/or confuse most audience members. 98 minutes
