For a whole lot of reasons, mycology isn't a very sexy subject. For starters few people know what the word means. And when they find out it's the study of (to quote Dr. Egon Spengler) "spores, molds and fungus," well, things kinda go downhill. And yet, this trippy, mind-expanding documentary on the subject unfolds like some kind of alien sci-fi film. The filmmakers talk to fringe scientists, computer programmers, visual artists, composers and other odd types obsessed with slime molds, a primordial life form that can move, hibernate and do all sorts of freaky and fascinating things. This retro-style science fair presentation would make a hell of a double-feature next to 1971's insect overlord documentary The Hellstrom Chronicle.81 minutes Unrated.
