Alias Betty

What is it about French filmmakers and American crime writers? Here, French director Claude Miller (The Little Thief, The Accompanist) adapts the novel The Tree of Hands by Ruth Rendell. The twisty, ensemble drama concerns a successful writer named Betty (Sandrine Kiberlain) who suffers the tragic loss of her young son in an accident. Betty's clinically disturbed mother takes it up upon herself to cheer up her grieving daughter by snatching a small child at random from a poor neighborhood. This sets off a tragic chain of sorrow and coincidence, in which the police start blaming members of the boy's own family for his disappearance. Although our heroine could stop the witch-hunt, she realizes that the boy has been inadvertently rescued from a life of abuse and poverty. It's a perfect crime--that is until Betty's vindictive ex-husband steps onto the scene. 101 minutes
