Jesse Eisenberg, Gabriel Byrne and Isabelle Huppert star in this glum but vivid drama for Norwegian director Joachim Trier (Oslo, August 31st), After their mother, a famous photojournalist, dies in a car crash, two brothers and their broken-hearted father have a very bad time getting on with their lives. Trier doesn't try to force any major story arc or cathartic conclusion on his characters—which is both naturalistic and frustrating. Although the story spins its wheels a lot, Trier's attention to detail is stunning. If you're willing to search each wonderful, individual scene for meaning, you'll walk away satisfied.
