Belladonna of Sadness

Godfather of Japanese anime and manga Osamu Tezuka ("Astro Boy," "Kimba the White Lion") produced this long-lost 1973 erotic animation. The gorgeous, Gustav Klimt-inspired imagery (much of it rendered in static, stylized watercolor) relates the story of a medieval maiden whose innocence is taken by a local lord on her wedding night. To exact revenge, she makes a pact with an impish devil who transforms her into a black-robed vision of madness and desire. Psychedelic in the extreme, this transgressive experiment in image and sound is a vintage head trip. For its first journey to America, the film has been fully restored—including eight minutes of surreal and explicit footage cut from the original negative. 86 minutes Unrated.
